4th of July

Today, the US celebrates independence from the British. The 4th of July is Independence Day. As I write this I can hear the riot of fire-crackers, bombs, explosions, rockets, fire-works, you name it!, going up in the distance, most likely above the lake. We thought the show would take place yesterday, but after waiting for two hours by the shore of lake Michigan, together with dozens of other people, we realised that something was amiss... yep, the show is today! But we were misinformed. Georgie did see a few fire-works yesterday but she got scared with the noise and didn't want to go out tonight.

We took some pretty photos of Chicago in the distance, from Montrose harbour, which is literally five minutes by car from where we live. The light was so beautiful towards the early evening, it kind of looks as if the city was floating on air, or just not there. We had to share.

By the way, according to many historians, and as heard today on Public National Radio, the day Americans should be celebrating their independence is really the 2nd of July, because that's when in 1776 the colonies voted to become independent from Britan. On the 4th of July, the Declaration of Independence was sent out for their signature (which happened on the 2nd of August). So, all these years in Brussels when we celebrate Georgie's birthday together with the "4th of July" on the 2nd of July, we are actually being historically accurate. Eh bien, who would have thought?!
